FREE HARM REDUCTION KITS AVAILABLE FOR PICK UP FROM OCONTO COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH

Free drug harm reduction kits containing Narcan, fentanyl test strips and education on how to use these items will be available for pick up from Oconto County Public Health starting on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, Oconto County health officials announced today. 

“Harm reduction is one piece of a comprehensive initiative to impact substance abuse and prevent drug overdoses,” stated Oconto County Health Officer Debra Konitzer.  “We know that every overdose death is preventable.  The goal of harm reduction is save lives and protect the health of people that use drugs and the communities that they live in.  We are preventing disease, preventing overdoses and promoting health by meeting people where they are in a non-judgmental way.  There will be no questions asked of people who pick up the kits.”

Oconto County Public Health is a division of the county’s Health & Human Services Department at the Oconto County Courthouse.  Harm reduction kit pick up is available at the Oconto County Courthouse, Building C, 3rd floor at 501 Park Avenue, Oconto, WI 54153.  The kits are available for pick up Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Health officials also state that Public Health is working to expand the harm reduction kit distribution, stating that harm reduction kits will be available for pick up in other locations.  Additional locations will be announced in the coming months.  

Oconto County Public Health acknowledges the work of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services in making Narcan and fentanyl test strips available to local health departments for distribution.
